Shawn and I have had a few wine crates kicking around from our kitchen at our old apartment. After searching endlessly for a bookshelf and never really finding what we wanted we decided to reuse these wine crates and build an awesome bookshelf. First we had to track down more wine crates to make it the right size. The best place to find them are higher end wine stores, as those are the only wines still shipped in crates. Shawn scored big at Brookline Liquors on Comm Ave in Allston, they had a ton sitting in the back and they let him grab 4 for free.
I came up with the idea, I was inspired by a bookshelf made out of old drawers in the ReadyMade book How to Make [Almost] Everything (pg 93 ). I did not help in making it, Shawn built the whole thing, he’s pretty crafty too. I just love how this bookshelf looks, and all the company names and all the details on the crates. I also love the fact the whole thing probably cost $35.00 to make.

Here is Shawn’s building plan.

We don’t have a saw but Shawn had the wood cut by the lovely people of Home Depot. All the sizes for your wood depend on the sizes of the crates, if you use the measurements above they may not work for your crates.
I also posted this project on Readymade ( link HERE ) Perhaps you may see this project in one of their next issues!
